Leaders Are Readers
BILLYFLORENCE FREDHARTEIS JODYVICTOR

By Billy Florence

Read.  Charlie “T” Jones, in his book, Life is Tremendous, says that we will be the same person five years from now that we are today except for the people we meet and the books we read.

The internet is a reading medium.  Want proof?  OK.  You are reading this article and it’s on the internet.  TV is for observers.  We lean back to watch TV but we learn forward to read…even on the internet.  TV provides us with words and pictures.  Little thinking is required.  Books provide us with the opportunity to supply our own sounds and pictures.  We get to think.  We get to imagine.

One of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child is a love of reading.  “Read me a story,” they ask again and again.  Take the time.  Read to them.  Read with them.

These Leaders Are Readers:

Fred Harteis'Favorites

“Books are the most wonderful friends in the world.  When you meet them and pick them up, they are always ready to give you a few ideas.  When you put them down, they never get mad; when you take them up again, they seem to enrich you all the more.”  - Fulton Sheen

Billy Florence's Favorite

"To read is to empower

To empower is to write

To write is to influence

To Influence is to change

To change is to live."  - Jane Evershed

Jody Victor's Favorite

“God be thanked for books; they are the voices of the distant and the dead, and make us heirs of the spiritual life of past ages.”  - Channing

 Orrin Woodward's Favorite

"The greatest gift is the passion for reading.

It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites,

it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind.

It is a moral illumination."  - Elizabeth Hardwick

President Lincoln's Leadership

by Fred Harteis

Lincoln Esource News Editorial Fred HarteisAbraham Lincoln has always been an inspiration to me because of his humble beginning.  He had a life of great adversity from beginning to end.  He acted miraculously in his ability to learn, grow and become better with each adversity.  President Lincoln failed forward his entire life.  He had great courage which was a result of great faith and perseverance.

Most people who face but a few of the great struggles which President Lincoln faced would give up, wish for the best and live a life of quiet desperation.  Lincoln did expect to learn from each experience and to become better, not bitter.  The Civil War was very difficult for him with incompetent Generals, and such a great struggle for this young nation.  God smiles when he would see Lincoln constantly pray and seek his counsel on great decisions.  Thank God for such a great leader for the great country.

Where Have All The Heroes Gone?

"Where Have All The Heroes Gone?"

     ENCOURAGEMENT

by Orrin  Woodward

Any culture that glorifies mediocrity and consistently denigrates performance will produce much more of the former and a lack of the latter. One of the ways we can change this is by encouraging excellence in all that we do and say. When you see someone going beyond their responsibilities to get the job done tell them that you noticed and appreciate their hard work. George Roche said:

"Why do we honor none like them (heroes) today? Surely this is a clear sign of our own faltering convictions and failing courage. Our debt to heroes is no metaphor, but the substance of a free society. It is our duty to one another and to moral law, a duty exemplified at its highest by the hero’s own selflessness. We have not kept our end of the bargain. The very words we need to think about heroes – valor, magnanimity, fortitude, gallantry – rust from disuse.”

Let us begin today by recognizing our heroes who by their example point to the better life that is possible through discipline and thought, character and action. Call up the heroes in your life who have inspired you to do more than you thought possible and thank them. I know in my own life how much my heroes have meant to me and anytime I see them I make sure I communicate my love and respect. There is nothing that feels better to a man or woman living a heroic life than to know that their life and example is having an impact.
